Random Record Review – Lighten Up, “Absolutely Not”

Lighten Up

Absolutely Not

Jump Start (2010)

If you love hardcore and aren’t listening to Lighten Up, you’re stupid.  It’s really as simple as that.  Lots of guys and gals are doing the “party hard thrash harder” thing in punk and hardcore these days it seems, with sleeveless t-shirts and denim cutoff short-shorts, but trust me, LU walk the walk.

The whole album rockets through your brain in a Dag Nasty/Descendents/the first Paint It Black album wavelength of “totally fucking awesome”, AKA about 20 minutes.  Lighten Up come and go almost before you’ve fully realized it, but in that time you cannot contain yourself from thrashing, singing, screaming, and finger-pointing all over the place.

Absolutely Not is an amazing album of blisteringly-ridiculous hardcore from the City of Brotherly Love.  It’s no-frills, no-posturing, no-pretensions music of the highest order, and both your record collection and mind are lesser for not having this yet.
