I FINALLY managed to get to see this movie, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.
The casting was perfect, the transition from the pages to the screen were amazing, the music was awesome, and the fights were totally and utterly rad. I don’t really know how else to describe this movie. It’s probably one of my favorite comic book film adaptations, as well as an awesome Wright movie, as well as one of the best martial arts films I’ve seen in a long time.
All at once.
I don’t really know what to say really, Edgar Wright was the perfect director for this movie and I was pretty much grinning throughout the whole thing in enjoyment. The film encapsulated almost all of the elements of the comic that I enjoyed, with any differences between the books and this film not really mattering at all because it still worked out wonderfully, with settings and colors and the mood just being straight-up perfect.
I know that a lot of people have had issues with the casting of Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, but if you’ve read the comics and then saw the movie, Cera’s a perfect Scott. Even if you weren’t a comic fan really and just watched the film being a fan of Wright or saw the trailers online, Cera is nothing like the “role” or set of behavior that he’s well-known for at all. I’m pretty certain that a lot of the dislike for this movie is based on preconceived notions solely about him, which is a shame because that’s a pretty retarded move to make.
Anyway, this is a movie that I will totally be getting on super-deluxe DVD and maybe even seeing in theaters again. It’s not just an “indie music” movie, it’s not just “a comic book movie”, or even a “video game movie”. It’s just a good movie all-round, and you should get your ass to go see.
